“Contrary to popular stereotype, computer programmers have not always been caffeine-fueled men in T-shirts coding deep into the night. In fact, some of the earliest programmers were female mathematicians, originally recruited to calculate ballistics trajectories for the Army during World War II.” —Tech Talk Podcast: Female Programmers in History - NYTimes.com

“The end of Google’s News Archive won’t be the end of digitized broadsheets. The New York Times, noticeably absent from the project, recently unveiled its TimesMachine engine, which allows readers to browse and read any issue of the of the Times from September 18, 1951 to December 30, 1922. But the service was an incredible resource for smaller publications which lacked the resources to undertake an extensive — and expensive — digitization process.” —Google Shuts Down Newspaper Archive Project - Jared Keller - Technology - The Atlantic

“When Tina Fey visited the Bay Area in April on her book tour for “Bossypants,” she made just two stops. She gave an interview before a sold-out crowd at the Orpheum Theater, as part of the City Arts & Lectures series. And she dropped by the Mountain View headquarters of Google. At an Authors@Google “fireside chat,” Ms. Fey, the “30 Rock” creator and star, had a friendly conversation with Eric Schmidt, the company’s executive chairman, in front of an audience of hundreds of employees who greeted her with a standing ovation. As Google’s reach into many aspects of media production and distribution grows ever greater, A-list authors, actors, musicians and others are taking part in the company’s six-year-old on-campus speaker series. Lady Gaga recently shared the stage with Marissa Mayer, the company’s vice president for location and local services, as did Christy Turlington, the supermodel turned documentary director.” —At Google, the Book Tour Becomes Big Business - NYTimes.com

“For the first time, the Library of Congress is streaming some of its vast collection of sound recordings of popular music, speeches and comedy online for free. Harry Connick Jr. will visit the library Tuesday to help introduce a new website called the National Jukebox. Connick will perform one of the songs featured on the site, written by music legend Eubie Blake. Up to now, library users had to go to the library in Washington to hear the sound recordings. Now, thousands of rare, historic recordings and special features will be available to many more people through the free site. It includes early jazz, dance music and opera.” —Library of Congress unveils National Jukebox to stream free music, historic recordings online - The Washington Post

This Little Piggy Built a Glass House - NYTimes.com → tmagazine.blogs.nytimes.com

“Steven Guarnaccia’s twists on “Goldilocks and the Three Bears” and “The Three Little Pigs” (Abrams, $19) recast the fairy tales as only a design dork could. So Papa Bear’s chair has a ladder back (by Charles Rennie Mackintosh). Goldilocks eats out of an Eva Zeisel bowl. The Three Little Pigs are (above, from left) Philip Johnson, Frank Gehry and Frank Lloyd Wright. And the house before which the Big Bad Wolf hopelessly huffs and puffs is none other than Fallingwater.”
