“One of the best initatives in Copenhagen’s mass transit system for years has been to let people bring their bike on the S-train - Copenhagen’s exisiting, mostly above ground metro system (not the mini version under construction) - for free! Being able to use your bike to and from the station serves to increase your range on a bike from the average for most people of 7.5 km to upwards of 30 km. This initiative has also been one of the most successful ways to drive passenger growth to the S-trains for decades. The S-train system is the backbone of the non-car transport system in the greater Copenhagen area. Danish State Railways have also done well to advertise their bicycle-friendly style” (via Copenhagenize.com - Bicycle Culture by Design: Better Intermodal Integration to Beat the Car).

“Made of steel and glass, the SkyCycle pathways would provide an above-ground path for long-distance bicycle commuters. Entrances and exits would be placed at regular intervals, perhaps at stations, and users would pay a swipe-in toll of one pound with their Oystercards. Because overhead rail links suburbs to the city and runs between London’s biggest stations, such a network could serve all types of commuters. With a corporate sponsor, SkyCycle could avoid dependence on public funding. Londoners are wary of the latter option, particularly with a project as fantastic as this one” (via Is London Serious About Building a Network of Elevated Bike Lanes? - Design - The Atlantic Cities).

“new york-based designers marcelo ertorteguy and sara valente have conceived the ‘cyclo-phone’, a bike-powered music machine. by pedaling a stationary bicycle connected to the instrument, users create different rhythms and compositions by cycling at different speeds. the instrument consists of a rubber flap attached to a bicycle rim that slaps on 8 pvc pipes that are held together in a radial configuration by a plastic stock water tank. each pipe is cut at a different length to produce different tones. the installation was fabricated for summer streets 2012 presented by the new york city’s department of transportation in manhattan” (via cyclo-phone by marcelo ertorteguy and sara valente).
