“I made my first pot - a wretched little bowl with a pitted glaze - in November, 1962. This simple act changed my life, leading me to believe, 50 years later, that potters may change the world for the better, one handful at a time. My feeling is that we potters finish our work, but only others can complete it, through use. Pottery, therefore, is only finished once, but can be completed endlessly, by a succession of users, keeping it active in a variety of settings. When we say we are “moved” by a pot, it may be the animating force of its creator refusing to be still”.

French designer and RCA graduate Gaspard Tiné-Berès started researching Short Circuit to find different solutions for these “waste” items. After taking apart and testing tons of component parts to understand their commonalities and how best to get them functioning again, he developed a series of goods that combines repaired elements with new, CNC-milled cork accents that don’t require the skills of master craftsmen to create” (via “Kitchen Appliances Constructed from their Landfill-Bound Brethren” Co.Design).

"new york born designer michael bernstein has developed a plan for a series of small gardens, and forests to be placed in recycled refuse dumpsters. his project ‘ten yards’ refers to the payload capacity of each dumpster. once constructed, these gardens can be installed with relative ease in any urban location; just as easily, they can be picked up by truck and moved to a new location. these units of greenery can be dispatched to neighborhoods in need of green spaces, each consisting of two rows of regionally grown pine trees."

“upon commission by global footprint - a northamptonshire-based visual arts and living heritage programme - british designer dominic wilcox has developed a bespoke pair of GPS prototype shoes which help guide you home. a piece of software has been created in which the wearer plots their desired destination on a map - this location is uploaded via USB to the shoe. through the use of two microcontrollers called arduinos, a simple click of the heels, where the GPS is embedded, activates the system, with a red tag containing the unit’s antenna positioned upwards. powered by battery, similar to that of mobile phones, data from the left shoe communicates wirelessly with the right one which shows progress via a bar of LED lights on the footwear’s toe cap. a green LED is illuminated once one has arrived at their final destination. the left shoe indicates the correct direction in which to walk by way of LEDs placed in a circle” (via shoes with GPS by dominic wilcox).
